Retro Recipe of the Week: Vegetable Potato Chip Casserole (With Weiners!)

Because Superbowl Sunday is coming up, I thought that this week’s recipe of the week should feature something you would find at many Superbowl parties, though in a more retro form (in other words, it’s junk food masquerading as wholesome food because it’s in casserole form!). Ingredients include “weiners” AND potato chips! This recipe comes from The Charm Kitchen Cook Book, published in 1948, available from my Etsy shop. "Cook for a man so he loves it, then he'll love the cook!". I am definitely making this casserole this weekend.

VEGETABLE POTATO CHIP CASSEROLE

In double boiler, cook until slightly thickened:

1 1/2 tsp melted margarine
1 1/2 tbsp flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 cup grated cheese

In greased casserole, put the following, half of each, until two layers are formed:

1 can peas - drained
1 cup diced ham (weiners, etc.)
1 1/2 cups crushed potato chips

Over top layer, pour white sauce. Dot with margarine. Then add: dash paprika. Bake 30 min. - 350˚.

Mod Homes at White Rock Lake, Texas

On a visit out to the Dallas/Fort Worth area last summer, my Dad wanted to pop over to the yacht club at White Rock Lake, where he sailed in the summer of 1960.  I discovered a treasure trove of 50's mod homes that overlook the docks at the yacht club.  Oh, if you decide to seek out these homes, I didn't send you OK?  It's a private club, so you're a "prospective member just going to check it out."
Great concrete block work and terrace.
I really like the rowboat hung from the rafters of the front porch.  It's nautical mod.  Hey, did I just coin a new phrase?
Nestled amongst the live oaks, this mid-century beauty has some great angles.  Loving the porch railing.

Etsy Shop Preview!

I was so lucky to have a hugely bountiful day of hunting for goodies, so here is a preview of some of the items I'll be listing over the next couple of weeks.  My favorites include:
*** A "Swedish Power" button and hockey puck lot
*** "Sweet Honesty"  cream sachet containers in their boxes from Avon (dripping with perfectly cheesy 70's pics and graphics)
*** Set of pink plastic cafeteria cups
***Red taffeta tablecloth with flocked black velvet roses
***1949 "How to Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets" book.

Some seriously sweet finds, so be sure to visit my Etsy shop The Cottage Cheese over the next few weeks.

Check out these groovy pillows from Norajane. The paint by numbers pillow sold before I had a chance to buy it, but I'm going to see if she'll make me another. And yes, those are more forks that you see. I told you there would be more forks.

Forks

Ok, so forks are not the first thing you think of regarding presentation when you're entertaining, but forks make a huge statement! Here are some of my favorites, from Etsy. I found so many, I can pretty much guarantee there will be a "Forks" part two at some point.
Incredible Swissair mid-century forks from Tippleandsnack. Oh, and there are matching spoons available too! I'm wondering who the designer is. They remind me of Russel Wright's Hull Highlight Pinch flatware.

Fondue Forks For Your Next Cheesy Affair, from SurrenderDorothy. You need these, "My Pretty!"
Big Fork and Spoon by Jawaddel. Ever noticed these hanging on the wall on the sets of Everybody Loves Raymond and 30 Rock?
Souvenir Hawaiian Cocktail Forks from MrFilthyRotten. Perfect for all of those fancy Spam appetizers (you know, because Spam is really big in Hawaii).
Great Mid-Century Mod Serving Fork and Spoon from Fabulousmess. Gorgeous. Enough Said.

C is for Cookie

Why is it that when I'm hibernating in winter, it makes me want to bake? Maybe it's all of those 50's cookbooks I sell, they make me nostalgiac for the "old" cookie recipes. I need all of these vintage Etsy finds to make me a happy little homemaker. I'm going to make some hermits, ginger creams, coconut ice box cookies, jumbles....

Perfect for rolling out those pretty little Valentine's heart sugar cookies, from sirkus.

One of several incredible vintage crocheted potholders from the oh-so-lovely auntsuesoldnewlovely

Possibly the coolest cookie cutter I've ever seen (make a "real" gingerbread man) from littlec

The prettiest pink and white crocheted apron from FlashbackRetro.

Yummy little 60's Cookie Book from auntmildred.

Now go bake something and make your tastebuds and tummy happy!

Etsy Snow finds

It's snowing here, and I'm like a little kid when it comes to snow. Because of "climate Change", we rarely get snow in Chattanooga anymore. Thus, the "Let it Snow" Etsy finds theme!

Vintage OP ski jacket from buyoldschool. I want it. Seriously.

Easy to look hot while you're sipping that toddy. Vintage Sheepskin Hat by tessimal.

Who doesn't love hot cocoa after a day of playing in the snow? (And no, you are never too old to play in the snow!). Swiss Miss Mug from FluffyFlowersVintage.

Craving Unique Pyrex?

I love the Amish Butterprint Pyrex I inherited from my grandmother, but I always have fun when I run across the lesser seen patterns. Here are some of my favorites that I found on Etsy.com. The gray laurel teacups above are from Cassielynne.

2 1/2 Quart friendship pattern dish from Lagelle. Love those 60's birdies.

Beautiful set of Snowflake Blue aka Snowflake Garland bowls from jessjamesjake.

Scary-cool "Barbed -Wire" divided casserole from the always fabulous SuzisCornerBoutique.

Lovely Pink casserole dish (unknown pattern name) from ricracandbuttons. Barbie would have included this girlie pattern on she and Ken's wedding registry.

Orange & Red Doors

I've owned six houses, several of which I lived in for less than a year because I bought them to renovate and re-sell. I seem to keep painting the doors orange or red. There's just something about that color that makes one want to see what's inside...

Recipe of the Week: Yummy Coconut Cuties

This recipe of the week comes from the 1950's Suburban Cookie Book, available from www.thecottagecheese.etsy.com. Enjoy!

1 c brown sugar
1 c coconut
2 eggs
1 1/2 c sifted flour
3 c quick oats
1 c white sugar
1 tsp soda
