Much more interesting than my prom dress...

Did you see this yahoo story about the duct tape prom competition? Over 240 couples across the U.S. and Canada competed for scholarships by designing and making their prom outfits entirely out of duct tape.
I'm seriously impressed.

Not my size :(

Why, oh why aren't these fabulous espadrilles from Dear Golden Vintage my size?
Many thanks to you guys for your comments on my last post. My day did indeed get much better and we had a good time hosting dinner at our house tonight for some of my family and Mr. Cheese's family, who hadn't seen each other since our wedding last summer. I'm already looking forward to the weekend, which will likely include lots of laughs with my family, my 7-yr old nephew beating us at croquet (he's a natural), good North Carolina BBQ, and a family tradition called Samauri watermelon.

The Golden Age of Couture Exhibit (Nashville)

Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts is exhibiting The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947 –1957. When we decided to spend yesterday afternoon in Nashville before dropping my sister off at the airport, we had no idea of the current exhibits at the Frist. We were in for a treat! The Couture exhibition is amazing, and I highly recommend a visit to anyone who can make it. Designers highlighted include Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, and Pierre Balmain, Hardy Amies, Charles Creed, and Norman Hartnell. The collection of more than one hundred dresses, accessories, original drawings, films, and photographs (by Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn) was originally organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum of London. There are at least 50 different designers represented. Within the U.S., the collection will only exhibit in Nashville, and runs through September 12, 2010. Find details about the exhibit here, and an interesting article here. The Frist is also exhibiting Chihuly Glass through next year.

The Lovely Clusters Catalog

Have you seen the new Lovely Clusters Catalog yet?

For those of you not familiar with Lovely Clusters, blogger/designer Rachel Follett has put together beautiful handmade and vintage product collections by color. In addition to the catalog, you can view the complete collection by color or category. And the Lovely Clusters blog is total eye candy. Did I mention that Rachel lives in Hawaii?

Vintage Regatta Fashion

Nautical is everywhere right now, which makes me such a happy girl. Because my Dad built small sailboats while I was growing up, I saw my fair share of nautical attire - from practical preppy (deck shoes, Op tees and corduroy shorts, Patagonia sailing shorts) to regatta party and trophy dinner attire (madras pants, red sport coats, canvas/ribbon sailboat belts, and lots of sailboat print dresses). Here are a few of my favorite nautical Etsy vintage fashion picks:
Mod Sailboat Dress from violetvillevintage
50's Vintage Navy Sailor Sweater from lollycrispvintage
Nautical Red Day Dress from Thrush
Cherry Corduroy Shorts from StopTheClock
Sailing Day Stripe Skirt from stilettogirl
Nautical Pin-up Girl Shorts from robinhartman
1960's Red Anchor Sweater Vest from FASHIONRERUN
Nautical Tri-color purse from joyelizabethG
Sailor Dress from TimelessVixenVintage
1950's Swimsuit from RockZombieOldies
Salty Sailor 1960's Blazer from Planetclairevintage
Madras Pendleton Jacket (for Men or Women) from 10thAvenueEast
Nautical Flag Belt (Men's) from madmenvintage
Sebago Topsiders Boat Shoes (Men's) from bootmeister

On a related note, Anita from the fabulous RollingHillsVintage made this super-cute nautical themed "Victoria Was A Sporting Woman" treasury over the weekend. My sad little screen shot doesn't do it justice. Click here to see the treasury full-size.

Did everyone have a nice weekend? Although we didn't spend the weekend on a boat, we did manage steal away to Crossville on Saturday for a hike and a trip to my favorite small town modern store. And yesterday we finally listed one of the Eames Lounge Chairs. We've decided to enjoy the other one for a while...

Cute shoes.

Here's a hint at a post I've been working on that will (hopefully) go live this weekend. I'm ridiculously in love with these Shoreham Wedge Sandals from Sperry Top-Sider. At $90, I can't justify buying them right now, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that in a month or two they'll go on sale.
A few fun things I've seen the past few weeks:

Great shadow.

Pink Stairs.

Cool tattoo.

A new favorite shop (found via yummychummy)

The most beautiful aerial photographs I've ever seen.

It's good to be Richard Branson.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

bOmode: French Vintage

I just happened upon the Etsy shop bOmode, and I've no idea how this fabulous shop passed under my radar. The shop owner sells both vintage clothing and her own creations from vintage materials. Oh, and did I mention that she's a fashion designer (turned full time mom) who lives in France?

Crochet Hot Pants and Dy-no-mite(!) 70's Decor

Hello 70's!

Are you reading Retrospace yet? Writing about all things good and bad in fashion, television, music, and pop culture from the 70's, and 80's, Retrospace picks up where Retrocrush left off (sorry Retrocrush, but what happened?). Just glimpse post titles such as "Crochet Gone Bad" and "Occult Lameness" for example, and you know it's going to be good.
Crochet hot pants and lederhosen. Awesome.
The sad thing is, had I been 20-something and hot in the 70's, I would have loved these outfits. Alas, I was too young.
A few more images from Good Housekeeping's Complete Book of Decorating (1971), and How to Make Your Windows Beautiful (1974). Like these? See more in this post.
As my regular readers know, I have a thing for chairs. I'd welcome the chairs in the pics above and below in my home. Dig those kitchen cabinets and kelly green ceiling too (although I fear that ceiling would bring about madness...)
Faux fur bedspread...
Loud wallpaper & completely unsanitary carpeting in the bathroom, but for some reason I find the room appealing. The cute chair and ocean view don't hurt.
Outta sight! 70's goodness from Omodern. (More pics from Omodern in this post).
These last few images are from Seventies Design. Does anyone know what restaurant this is, and if it still exists? I would totally eat here (although I find the pyramids a bit scary).
The architect/designer's repetition of the circle six times (can you find them all?) is quite brilliant.
There was probably a whole lotta' cocaine snorted in this room.
Another groovy restaurant interior (top right), and what's the deal with that pod kitchen (lower left)?
Is it wrong that I actually like some of this stuff?
