Happy Weekend to You

Last week Mr. Cheese and I took the day off to hike and take a dip in this perfect swimming spot up on the Cumberland Plateau. The trek to the swimming hole was a bit too treacherous to risk taking the good camera (though with creek crossings and waterfall rewards along the way). So no pics this time. It was a dreamy day. The image above perfectly captures the pure childlike joy of the moment in my memory.

Go do something fun this weekend. Feel like a kid again!

Spring-like Weekend

We've enjoyed the most beautiful weekend weather; it has me craving spring and digging in the garden. I wanted to plant some pansies yesterday, but alas I could not find any for sale. I had to settle for opening the doors and watching the breeze blowing the leaves of my little gold tree.

A good Saturday: Architectural Exchange & Assorted Wanderings

Two weekends ago, my husband and I were a feeling a little restless, so we wandered around town (both on foot and by car) taking pictures along the way. I was actually testing a vintage camera, but pulled out the digital when the mood struck me. We stopped in my favorite salvage shop in town, Architectural Exchange. The salvage area is so dark that I didn't get good pics, but for an old-house lover such as myself, it's like a playground. In addition to all of the old doors, trim and mouldings, fireplace mantles and tile, windows, doorknobs, etc., the owner also stocks great old light fixtures and chandeliers, and part of the building is dedicated to antiques.
Check out the mod door. Love...
Collection of Breyer horses...
Coke crates, mirrors, unique shutters, old prints and paintings, (and I dig the ladders hung from the ceiling)...
I really wanted this adorable metal turkey platter, but had to resist because I'm so short on space for new things. I think it was only $14.
I had to include this shot because I do love some Russel Wright. But I have to say, EVERY single shop or antique mall I've ever seen Russel in is ridiculously overpriced. I don't think that shop owners really want to part with it. The big stack of saucers was mid-century Bob's Big Boy (though I think the restaurant was called by another name, and it wasn't Shoney's).
I loved this pair of large desert prints, and thought they were well priced at $50.
After leaving Architectural Exchange, we took a walk around Coolidge Park. I know some of you are giraffe lovers like me, so imagine my delight when I came upon this little piece of "graffiti".

I'm sad to say that we thought we would be out of town, so we made no real plans for Halloween. So I can't wait to see your pics and hear about your Halloween madness, bwaaahhhahaha... (<---evil villain laugh). Have a great weekend!

These are Not good photos

Apparently it's monsoon season here, and the deluge of rain daily has foiled our living room renovation and frame-making plans for the entire week. And I've come down with a summer cold, so that has me feeling extra blah and with zero energy today. My one accomplishment this morning: I organized a bunch of old photos on my old powerbook. The theme of today's post is "These are not good photos but I like them anyway." Some are out of focus, some are grainy, some are downright everyday dull. But for some reason, I feel an affinity for each one of them.

Pelican takes flight. Taken at dusk in Cedar Key, Florida in April 2009.
Abandoned flip-flop on the side of the road in Cedar Key. Taken in April 2009. For some reason, this pic reminds me that summer is winding down and it makes me feel a little sad. Perhaps is I should go shop for some skinny jeans and boots I'll feel better.
Big dog "Jade" carrying an even bigger stick. Taken at my parents' old house in Chattanooga, Autumn 20005 (?).
Sign on one of those throw-at-a-target game booths at the July 4th, 2009 celebration on the courthouse lawn in Dunlap, Tennessee. The prizes included a gun, a haircut and color, or an oil change.
Home run scored during a Rangers v. Braves baseball game, summer 2008. Arlington, Texas.
Armadillo in our campsite at Manatee Springs State Park, Florida, April 2005. I know these critters are destructive, but they are so cute!
My first "sighting" of a UFO Peach. Ok, that was a bad pun. But aren't they adorable? Taken at some small town grocery store some time during peach season this year.
Giant snowflakes and me in my pajamas. If you enlarge this picture you can see my pup Dodge in the doorway, eyes huge and glowing green from the flash. He looks like an alien. Taken in front of our house in Knoxville, Tennessee in January 2005.
I hope you've enjoyed my crappy pictures :)

Random Hump Day Happy Photos

I'm feeling slightly unmotivated and uninspired today, so I thought I'd post some random images that make me happy...
Photo above via douglasspics. Photo below via flickr (user forgotten, sorry!)
I want this cute Georges Briard tray (only $18) from Paper Poppy Vintage, but I am buh-roke as can be. Please someone buy it and take pics of it at your 60's themed patio party so that I may live through you.
I can't get enough of Penelope Pug (whose pics I've posted before). You must check out pilarkitty's photostream.
I want this hamburger cake. Cake is almost as good as cheese. Via dessertolicious.
Because we can't just eat cake... Via j-walkblog.
I took these last 3 pics of my nephews in Texas in June.

I wish I were lounging in this pool right now...

Ok, I suppose I'd better get some actual work done today. Have a great hump day!

A Summer Party

My fiance's sisters and Mom threw us an engagement party on Saturday at my future mother-in-law's house. She has a lovely 2-story English Tudor style home with a nice deep backyard garden. Most of the photos that we took during the day were just of people you wouldn't know, so I'll spare you that "this is so and so" and let them have their privacy and just share the pictures that I think we can all dig. The garden was lit with white paper lanterns, hundreds of little white lights, hundreds of candles and luminaries, and tiki torches. It was amazing!

They set up numerous seating areas anchored with rugs, like little outdoor living rooms. These were taken with my digital, and I have no external flash, so they are kind of grainy and blurry from the long exposures. But I kind of like that quality. Our friend Mike brought a keg of his home-brewed IPA (not pictured). Fresh home brew is so tasty! This is the late night crowd. Note the ever-present Eames...

Bad pic below, but I like it so I'm posting it anwyay ;)
The picture board was a huge surprise. Those sneaky future sister-in-laws e-mailed my family to ask for photos, and they sent a big box of them. Click to enlarge and see our embarrassing childhood memories in better detail. Of course there were a couple of me on Christmas morning, no make-up, ugly early 90's clothes, tee-hee. The Boy's Christmas pic shows him in a tie. Whah? There is a mystery pic of me with Frankenberry (remember that cereal?). The Boy sports a lone ranger mask, holster, and gun. Even in the fourth grade, The Boy was such a cutie.
Just some of the yummy party food. Served on my future sis-in-law's Eva Zeisel dinnerware.
I love this big bunch of crepe myrtle flower clusters. I never did find out whose garden these came from. Our too-generous friends and family gave us some incredible gifts. The long brown box was a croquet set!!! If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know my love for croquet. We play hilly courses in my area, all the more challenging.
Well my lovelies, yesterday we decided to add a day to our trip and leave tomorrow instead of Wednesday (eeek!). I'm going to try to visit everyone before we leave, and create a few posts to run while we are off getting hitched, preppie island style. Geez, I think I'm loopy this morning from lack of sleep. Have a great week everyone!
